Swami Vivekananda Scholarship Tournament

SUNDAY, JUNE 26TH, 2022, 2PM-7PM ET

A VIRTUAL EVENT.

Open to all High School students!

Application Deadline: June 3rd, 11:59 PM ET

Topic: Does Sanātana Dharma prioritize the individual or the community?

The Hindu Students Council (HSC) Swami Vivekananda Scholarship Tournament (SVST) is a virtual debate competition which will occur on June 26th, 2022 from 2:00 to 7:00 PM ET. The winners will receive a scholarship from Hindu Students Council and its partners.

The topics debated upon are directly related to Vedanta and Hindu philosophy. The two-fold mission of the tournament is to empower Hindu youth by facilitating Vedanta-driven discourse and to provide sewa to the Hindu community by giving financial support to motivated, knowledgeable Hindu high school students.

From the online applicant pool debaters will be selected to participate in the tournament based on the quality of their responses. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance into the tournament by June 5th, and will have 3 weeks to prepare their cases.

The event also will enable high school students to debate in a similar fashion to how ancient Hindu philosophers and scholars historically argued with one another.

By applying the tradition of purva paksha, each competitor will be required to understand their opponent’s argument intimately and provide counter arguments based upon this understanding. Thus, in putting on this tournament, HSC hopes to create an empathetic and understanding atmosphere to engage in discussions surrounding Sanatana Dharma.

Students will need to research the provided topic thoroughly and prepare cases for both sides of the argument. These cases will be the only part of the debate that is pre-written.

The winner of the final round will receive $2500, the runner up will receive $1000, and the semifinalists will receive $500 each; the best speaker, as determined by speaker points, will receive $500.

All interested high school students are encouraged to fill out the application form by the deadline of June 3rd at 11:59 PM ET. Competition organizers are not eligible to apply.
